The delivery war got a lot more interesting this week. On November 5, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER) announced that U.S. Prime members can now order Uber Eats directly through Amazon with a $0 delivery fee on restaurant orders over $25. DoorDash (NASDAQ: DASH) closed down 13% that day, at $172.04.
That came one week after DoorDash agreed to buy Instacart, which trades as Maplebear (NASDAQ: CART), for about $17 billion. Uber has its own $14.8 billion deal pending for Delivery Hero (XETRA: DHER). Both companies are spending big to own local delivery, and both just reported strong third quarters.
Both stocks also have loud supporters. Uber’s fans point to its cash machine and a valuation that looks cheap. DoorDash’s fans point to faster growth and a founder who has outexecuted everyone in his category.
I’m going to pick one. This isn’t about which stock does better next quarter or even next year. Instead, it’s a case about which business I’d rather own for the next ten years. And the matchup is closer than either fan base will want to admit.
